This workshop will be of use to anyone who wants to know more about the basics of toxicology and how it underpins hazard communication. The basics of toxicology will be introduced with the aim of instilling a better appreciation of the toxicological information that is presented in MSDS and product labels. It will enable the participant to make a better assessment of the quality of data that is provided by suppliers, and which is ultimately used in risk assessments.
The workshop will cover the following
- What is toxicology?
- How chemicals can cause harm; acute Vs chronic toxicity and local Vs systemic effects.
- Paracelsus and the Dose response relationships. (including threshold levels)
- Hazard and exposure relationship.
- Toxicokinetics (absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion)
- Toxicity testing – definition of common terminology (useful for interpreting MSDS)
- Target organs - Limited to lungs, liver, skin, nervous system (including the brain)
- Common toxicological effects
- Allergic contact dermatitis and respiratory allergy
- Irritant contact dermatitis
- Carcinogenicity and mutagenicity
- Reproductive and developmental effects
- Effects on the nervous system

Armchair Toxicology For Lawyers

This course will take a look at cases involving chemical poisoning from a toxicological perspective. It will act as a guide to establish whether or not the case has legs prior to taking it any further. In addition the course will provide an insight into the kind of information that is of use to a toxicologist and how it is used in such cases.
Specifically, this workshop will explore the following:
1. The basics of toxicology: How chemicals cause harm, common exposure routes, what chemicals do to us, and what our bodies do to chemicals
2. How medical and hospital notes are used
3. How estimates of actual chemical exposure can be made (or not)
4. How toxicological data and literature is used
5. What questions should be asked of a potential client to ensure that all necessary information is obtained
6. Honest and dishonest presentation of false poisoning. (Factitious disorder, psychogenic symptomology, other psychiatric presentations)
